Winnow's Wednesday Wanderings
Teaching the Joy of Giving Back: Lessons from a Mom’s Heart
After the sting of losing Midway’s playoff football game faded, a moment of inspiration struck our family. My youngest son, no longer tied up with practices during Thanksgiving week, proposed something that warmed my heart: “Mom, since I won’t have football, can we deliver meals for Meals on Wheels every day?” His eagerness reminded me of why we love this tradition so much.
Our Meals on Wheels routes are about more than delivering hot lunches. My son takes pride in meeting the recipients, offering a warm smile, and sharing short conversations. Each return to the car is filled with stories - about TV shows, pets, and the kindness exchanged at the doorstep. It’s humbling to realize we might be the only visitors they see that day. It reminds us to appreciate the community we have, while giving back to those who might not. Here's a snapshot from one of our stops the week of Thanksgiving.
The slower pace between Thanksgiving and Christmas gives us time to reflect and serve more intentionally. I think about those who lack the family and food we enjoy, and how acts of service can rekindle their connection to the world. Over the years, I’ve made it a priority to involve my three sons in community service. Whether through church, schools, or organizations like the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL), serving has been a cornerstone of our family’s values. I made it my mission to avoid raising self-absorbed, entitled kids and to broaden their community.
YMSL, founded in 2015 in Waco, has been pivotal for us. It is an organization for mothers and sons to serve throughout the community together. It’s not just about the service hours; it’s about the bonding moments and life lessons shared with each other and with like-minded families. With my oldest son, Austin, I joined the organization in its first year, have served on the Board of Directors every year since, with the exception of one, and even served as its President for two years. These moments have not only shaped my boys but have strengthened my ties to the broader community.
Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in our community, especially with rising costs. Organizations like Meals on Wheels and Shepherd’s Heart help fill the gap. Recently, we joined a Saturday Shepherd’s Heart food distribution at our church. Seeing the joy on young volunteers' faces as they served was a reminder that hope is alive and well in Waco.
As we gear up for the holiday season, my family will keep delivering food, sharing conversations, and spreading warmth wherever we can. If you’d like to join us in serving, let me know - we’d love to have you! I’ll even bring the breakfast and coffee! 😊
